Rules at the Table
Lets go over some of the rules and common courtesy at the poker table.
The Tennessee Poker League tries- to the best of our abilities- to
stay with the rules that the WSOP and other professional groups
play by.
All poker rooms in casinos are now smoke free.
We started that last year and with few exceptions it has worked well.
Phones are not allowed at the table during a
tournament. They are allowed in cash games, however--you will
be dealt around if you are on the phone and your hand will be declared
dead if you answer it after you have cards.
Folding and betting, should always be done in
turn. If you make a mistake occasionally, well, we all make mistakes,
just try to keep it to the occasionally and not the every time habit.
Discussing the board is something that should
not be done. If you were playing in a cash game and it had a bad beat
jackpot the house could call the hands dead if someone at the table
was talking about the flop. Besides that--you give the players the
unfair advantage of your thoughts of what is possible. Perhaps they
had not seen the same thing or the possibility of the hand.
Showing your hand to one player is OK if you
intend to show it to the whole table. If not- keep it to yourself. If
you are called you must show both cards. Turning up one card is not
acceptable to win the pot. No hand can ever be won by one card. Do not
expect the dealer to turn it for you, the only thing they can do is
muck it, at that time you would then lose the hand.
Getting tells. It is perfectly alright to
try to get an opponent to give something away. Stay within the time
limits if you are playing in a timed tournament. Taking to much time
is just annoying to the table and really won't get you much.
Bad beats, happen to everyone who plays
poker. Everybody has a story, and a short one is a good one to
tell--in the right time and place. Players who constantly complain are
no fun to be around and will soon find themselves with no one to tell
them to. |

The fooling around Raise
This play has been around forever. I saw it in limit hold'em
games and now I see it again in no-limit. Only a few players do it,
but those who do tend to do it again and again. I'll call it the
"fooling around" raise.
Here's how it goes in no-limit: Some guy limps in, or maybe
he calls a regular-sized raise. Then, another player behind him
raises. There might be a call or two, and then our original caller
decides to re-raise. But it's not a big re-raise (that might imply a
big hand). Its a small raise, perhaps a minimum raise. Recently in a
$1-$2 game, I saw this fool-around raiser call $2 and then when it was
$12 back to him, he made it $22 to go. He had pocket threes.
Then, after a $10 raise and a call, I saw him make it $20 to
go. He had J-9 that time.
Then he limped in for $2, and I made it $15 with pocket
queens. A tight player called from one of the blinds (very likely a
small or medium pocket pair or A-K). The fool-around guy made it $30
to go. I re-raised $60 more. The tight player whined about wanting to
see the flop and folded. then, the fool-around guy grinned and folded.
I've seen these fooling-around raises for as long as I've
been playing. Again, only a small percentage of players make them
regularly. They usually choose drawing hands, such as connectors or
small pocket pairs. Be on the lookout. They are very exploitable, so
if you find one of then in your game, rejoice.
