This from Haskell:

Bad Beat Stories from Tunica,

I never went below my starting 10,000 in chips and floated between 10 and 15 thousand, until about halfway through the fourth 40 minute session.

I started the hand with somewhere between 12 – 13 thousand chips.  The hand started out good; I was in the small blind with pocket aces!

The button raised it to 1200 and I struggled for a while before calling J .   The BB folded so I was heads up; the flop was 5 K 9 with two diamonds.

I check hoping he had a K, he bet 10 thousand.  I go all in - 11 thousand and something; he calls and shows K T (no diamonds).

It was perfect until the T came on the turn.  I was hoping the board would pair, but the river was a J of hearts.

I think I played well, just bad luck.

It was still a fun trip, Thanks to Dan, Jan, and the TPL for making it possible!

I would like to thank all the members of The Tennessee Poker League for making 2007 another great year for the league.

This is our 3rd year and it is marked by remarkable play by some of our members and much improved play by even more.

We had a record year for sending players on trips to various casinos. We had a great year for players placing in the money on some of those trips.

We have continued to expand with more locations, more players and the league is expecting to have many more events in 2008.

Its my opinion this league is more fun and informative than trying to learn to play by risking your money in a live money game.

I wish the league had been formed before my first time of trying to play in a casino. I would stand outside the poker room hoping to catch Dan's eye so he would come out and I could talk to him.

Little did he know what he was creating when he tried to tempt me into playing and finally succeeded. He would never have known how much fun I would have at the hold em table. So much so, that he left his boring 7 card stud game and came to see why I was laughing and (I must admit so where the guys I was donating my money to) seemed to be having a great time.

That was in 1998 at the Horseshoe in Tunica. Dan discovered he loved hold em and in 1999 he won a big tournament in Vegas at the Orleans.

I won several smaller tournaments in Tunica and played in the WSOP women's event there in January of 2000, finishing 10th.

I played in the Women's Tournament of Champions in 2001 at the Orleans and won that and an entry into the big event, where I lasted 10 hrs against some of the best of the best.

Our love of this game is the reason for the league. We were coming back from a trip to Caesars Indiana when we planned the whole idea of the league. By the time we were home the league was born. I went online and registered the name and we were off and running with about 10 players. And the rest as they say ......is history.

Jan

Wishing you all a prosperous and great New Year.

The Caesars Indiana Event was good to some of our players and not so good to some.

Caesars Indiana, the world’s largest riverboat casino and the second stop on the 2007-2008 WSOP Circuit tour, got off to a strong start with 668 players creating an opening-event prize pool of $189,238.

The TPL had three players entered in this event. Michael Trivette, one of our player/dealers, Jan Numan, league management, and Dan Numan, league president.

Michael lasted a long time in the tournament, going out with a good hand that did not hold up. Jan had to lay down pocket Aces on the second hand of the tournament and it never got any better and she was out in less than an hour.

Dan was up and down all day, before dinner break he was the chip leader on his table. He managed to make the final table by playing well and making some creative moves through the day.

When he reached the final table he was second shortest stack. By the time they reached 5 players he was briefly the chip leader, winning a large pot when his A-9 beat an A-Q against the only woman player left. She got him back two hands later when he held pocket Kings to her pocket Jacks. She spiked a Jack on the river and he went down in chips.

He moved all in with a J-10 against the chip leader who held an A-7, the 7 flopped and Dan went out in 4th which paid $13,247.

Saturday’s tournament had 563 players with a slightly higher prize pool. Three TPL players were entered, Jason Cunningham, Scott Schultz and Dan Numan.

Jason did not last long, also going out with his best hand of the day. Scott lasted quite a while and got a lot of play for his money.

Dan played hard all day and made the money again. Coming in 20th for a prize of $1087.33.

Turned out to be a good weekend for Dan, since he had won his entry playing in the cash games on Thursday night and went back to the cash games after the tournaments and managed to make a bit more.

The women’s tournament had a record field and two TPL players. Bree Murray who also deals for the TPL finished just out of the money with some great play. She also managed to make a little playing in the 2-4—4-8 cash games. Seems like that game was just suited to her play and she got to be really good at it in the short time she played.

Jan Numan was out before any one knew she was in. Good cards that did not hold up and wham-bam gone. Ahh well – maybe next time.

Email from Rick Barnes on his trip to Caesars. Nice going Rick!

Hello  Guys,   Just writing to tell Dan Congratulations on his tourney results!  Did anybody else from the League place in the money?   I wasn't able to get up to Indy until Monday for event #5, a $300 buy-in event.  I didn't do as well as Dan, but I finished 18th out of 382 for $966.  I think I could have done a little better, but I messed my schedule up, and by the time I had put in my 8 hours, I was exhausted.   I reached the final 3 tables with an above-average stack, but anted and blinded off most of my stack without making a play.

I have a few hands I need to discuss with you guys, or other players from the league, when time permits.
    Again, Congratulations!
    See you soon,
         Rick Barnes (#311)
